Social Practice Mending
Danny
I experimented a bit with acrylic-paint and cornstarch, the texture and the thickness were great, but the finish is a bit too matte for my liking.
Here are some rough silhouettes, they both represent my dad. He was a photographer and an entertainer in a bar. The left painting is based on a very old photograph of him in his hayday.
I made videos of my experiment to see if it would be easy to capture working like this, and it it suits the tone of voice I want the final video to have.
I like the close up shots more than the top view, it's more intimate and less static.

I have been searching for some poems that resonate with the subject and I personally really like. I'm unsure if I will use them since they're rather short.

I like this poem because it's about being stuck in a moment, in a loss.

When you're lost in before,
And your spirits are low -
I will take you to more.
You will help me to know.
When your night lasts a day,
And your day's full of night -
I will make it okay.
You will make it all right.
When you're sure you're alone,
With your doubt and your fear -
I will make it my own.
You will be there to hear.
And I'll show you instead
When you're thinking of then,
That the future's ahead -
And we'll find it again.
You'll weather the wind and the rain and the rough -
And sometimes you'll try but it won't be enough.
You did what you could,
but it's not up to you.
You did what you could,
and that's all you can do.

While I was painting I realized that showing my father as a black silhouette has a lot of connotations that I don't want it to have. So I decided to use the picture's that I found with him in them and create something collage-y.

He used to smell like leather and cigarette's, therefore I thought it would be a nice idea to give him a leather jacket. For the smell and the texure
After I was done with painting I realized that it wasn't exactly what I had in mind. It was too flat and something was missing.
So I experimented further and eventually made a  "kijkdoos" (diorama). As a kid I used to make a lot of these so I thought it would be a nice mending gesture as well.
Usually i'm very perfectionistic and like to polish my work a lot. But since i'm here at the academy i've learned that the communicative value of your works is just as important, and perhaps maybe even more.

I want this project to be imperfect and something clumsy, I am clumsy, the way I talk about things can be clumsy and that's okay. So I recorded the voice over in one take and didn't cut
The end result
